My Lord, was it for me you came?
Despised, rejected, bearing shame
Though guiltless, guileless was thy heart,
Was it for me thou didst heaven depart?
Was it for me thou earth defiled?
Traversed for many a wearying mile
To show the greatness of thy care
The weight of sorrow’s load to share,
To preach thy kingdom close at hand
Implanting it in the heart of man?
Was it for me thy sweat turned blood?
And from thy wounded flesh that flood
Flowed to wash these sins away?
Was it for me? Oh, happy day!
Was it for me thou rose again
And made of sin’s cruel reign an end
That no more should I be enslaved?
Was it for me, Lord, all you gave?
My soul rejoices all day long
In laughter, dancing, grateful song
For clearly now this truth I see:
All that thou didst Lord, was for me.
