Every time I write especially about the youths that I come in contact with I realize the big generation gap. I always remember things my Mom or Dad would say. Youths today are so much more verbose. They are more technically advanced. They tend to be more fashionable. Also, their love for certain music surpassed me and I love music almost to the core.
Their verbosity is of such that they always have something to say or something to defend. You cannot just have a simple conversation with them to advise them and they are not defending or arguing. In my days we would have been told to shut up and listen especially if we were dealing with adults. They rebut and chat in the middle of everything. This I believe can leave a bad taste. It is important to understand that the advice that you get today could save your life tomorrow.
Youths now are all into gadgets and playing games or using some app to do something. Mom and Dad know that this is not good. I am not sure if there is a young person today without a phone, tablet, laptop or other gadgets. They have information at the tip of their fingers.
Information can also be a distraction if it is only used for fun and not education. It’s sad when you have information at your fingertips yet, you cannot state how many planets there are, or how many parishes or states are in your country. It is also not a good thing when kids are no longer socializing with others. They no longer learn how to relate to their peers and those around them. This more than ever will cause Mom and Dad to worry. They will not have a clue as to how to settle disputes or how to keep a good relationship going. So let’s train them to use these gadgets in a way to enhance their lives.
Their fashion sense is another thing. Everything is tight. If it’s not showing it’s not glowing. There was a time when men wore clothes with space in them. Now, you have to squeeze to get into every garment. The truth is the clothes are great and the kids look fabulous in them. I am however afraid of the attention that they may draw to themselves. This happen when the skirts are extra short and thin. It is also of concern when they are tight and thin and revealing. There are also periods when they are just downright inappropriate. I know though, there will not be one youth to say that sometimes they are. We need to be careful about what we are advertising.
Now seriously we need to look at the music. Youths should not be listening to music that is infused with bad words. They are in almost in every sentence or sexually inflamed sentences that leave nothing to the imagination. In my time we use to have these but they were censored and could only be heard in certain places. Kids are now able to download music of all kinds of rap, gospel, reggae, dancehall calypso, and others without guidance. They will then just play as they have alike. Kids do not understand that order is needed at every stage of development. Mom and Dad have to ensure this. We are allowing them a sense of freedom that will not end well if it is not guided properly.
If we say we love our children let us show them that we do. Setting guidelines and making sure that they stick to them is key because our future depends on it. Growing in a different era does not mean that the proper positive principles that made us who we are, cannot be used to make them great people.
