FROM THAT PLACE

When Romario Weir aka Di-Ruption puts together a song such as this it shows how in touch he is with his community and the society at large. This powerful message brings to our attention how and where many of our youths are grown. It speaks to the culture that has made them into who they are.

This does not mean that because you were brought up in the “ghetto” (which for me is a state of mind) then you have to stay in that state. Youthlove interprets this song as one that says I will remember where I am coming from but my dreams or my ambition is to bring a change. Di-Ruption has done a great job. I am from that place.

From that place” echoes the sentiments that I love my home and it is no worse than anywhere else. It is not something that I would give up even though its hard. This is a place where I have learnt and seen a lot of things. It is also a place of fun and excitement. Our culture being as diverse as it is sees fun in many different ways for different people. We all have our own taste but we need to respect them all.

Pointing out the realities of the inner city though and the issues surrounding it sends a strong message. His prayer is for intervention. He points out that the place is “full of greatness but few believers”. This expresses the need to garner the talents which is being wasted. We are aware that “friends kill friends and dog eat dog” because of frustration. The cry goes out for help especially for the poor and needy.

This place is hard for many both young and old. It is sad to note though that the morgue is seen as the next place even for the nine year old who travels with a “nine”. Once again the realities are seen because “From that place” all has to hustle in an effort to put food on the table.
