I took a trip down to Frenchman’s Cove in Portland, Jamaica and it really was with a difference. The drive down from St Thomas, Jamaica was one that had me turning and twisting from a multitude of potholes that decided to be a hindrance to my journey. The journey was with great and crazy company, my family. We were laughing and having fun except for the few times when I had to take a plunge into one of those ‘pool holes’.
Apart from the potholes though the lush vegetation was one of intricate beauty and as I travelled along the coast I suffered from a crowd of ideas especially in the area of tourism. After about an hour and a half, I left the main road and took a right turn off a beaten path to the gate of Frenchman’s Cove. As I drove through the gates I was met by a lone security who was quite hospitable. After making payments we were directed to the beach and river.
The unique thing about this beach was that the river met the sea right there. The water gives you a twofold feeling if it can be expressed in this way. The point is the river was somewhat cold and the sea had a warmer temperature so while you were in the sea you could feel the difference in the temperature at times but only cool in the river. The beach was lovely as it was white sand and there were quite a few visitors on the shore. This place was again becoming a ‘hot spot’ and I was there to see it rejuvenating. I am proud. The waiters were charming and the lifeguard was on his toes. The patrons were drinking and eating but what was notably absent was music.
The sweet reggae beat was not to be heard and I was disappointed. The visitors looked like they were from all over the world and reggae which is our heartbeat should have been heard. We spent the rest of the afternoon walking, playing, sleeping, reading and surfing the net. Yes, there was WiFi. I was no longer upset about the music because I found it all relaxing and it gave me a sense of peace and tranquillity. It was a great day and when we left we believed it was time well spent. I think you should come and get a taste of it yourself. I am going back because I heard the Villas were all renovated and filled with visitors.
