“Is The Church The Four Walls?”, asked COVID19

It has really been fascinating to see how The children of God went about worshipping especially during this covid season. The churches were all closed yet we all had to worship and what great worship it was!

The four walls of the church became our minds. It was so active during these covid weeks as we worshipped with a difference. We did so more than we have ever done in our lives.

Firstly and I am not sure if many will agree with me, we worshipped with our family as we bonded. We were and still can spend time with our children and our spouses. This will make our relationships stronger than they were before. The time we got to spend with our children is precious. Sometimes we are never seen until late nights or sometimes for weeks on end. This I believe was real worship as a chain is as strong as its weakest link.

Secondly, we prayed but we were not doing so in the church buildings. We went on our knees beside our beds or in our beds. We did it in our bathrooms or places may be where we have never prayed before. Many of us just walked around and talk to God in our houses. Many of us had worship in our cars while the pastor led from the microphone all because of social distancing. Where was the building in all of this?

Thirdly, we worshipped from our giving to the needy. I believe so much more in this time than I have ever seen. Christians came together and made masks. they got foodstuff together along with clothes and they took these things to the elderly and homeless in shelters. Some placed on their protective gears and went to homes of the elderly and poor within their community. We made sure that they were all taken care of.  Meals were prepared so no one went hungry. Where was the building in all of this?

Fourthly our phones, tablets and computers became our medium of worship as well. No longer were they just tools of fun, gossip and idle chat or even just for professional use, they became vehicles of the word of God and  I believe they even had a larger reach than just our church buildings.

Every social media platform was used in one way or another to help and spread the great news of Christ all over this world.  This was also done in many forms as well. We saw people using drama, music, song, dance and art to spread the word on these mediums. Creativity was and is at its best as we are still going through this dreaded Covid season.

Finally, the point is we do need the assembly which is the building. Let us remember that worship begins with us as individuals. The church is our body. We are the temple of God and we should not allow ourselves to just sit in church when the work that needs to be done is outside of the building.

Let us remember that the church is just an assembling point where we come together to strengthen, motivate and encourage each other in love. Together iron sharpeneth iron but our true worship is in our actions and that begins in us and shines as we act in our wider community. So for the question that was asked at the very beginning by Covid, the answer is no, the church was in us all along.
